According to reports from the company, Amazon has made over 700 orders of compressed natural gas class 6 and class 8 trucks. The pandemic led to a rise in delivery services while the passenger traffic reduced significantly. The increase in delivery activities led to more pollution as heavy trucks account for most greenhouse gases emitted.

Reuters reported that most Transportation companies have turned to the production of electric vehicles to minimize carbon emissions. Medium and heavy-duty trucks are the most used for freight movement; they account for over 20% of the industry's greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, most companies are working on ways to operate carbon neutral businesses.

MORE THAN 700 TRUCKS FOR AMAZON SO FAR

There is a Amazon's company statement in whch they say how much they are excited with their quest to find a viable solution for freight transportation. Amazon is currently testing several vehicle types, including; electric, compressed natural gas, and others. They have ordered more than 700 compressed natural gas class 6 and class 8 trucks so far. Amazon also ordered 100,000 electric vans from Rivian Automotive LLC, and their delivery is currently in process.

AMAZON'S HEAVY-DUTY TRUCKS

Cummins Inc. and Westport Fuel Systems Inc. are to supply engines which will be used by Amazon's heavy-duty trucks. Furthermore, the trucks would move freight from Amazon's warehouses to distribution centers. And according to some sources, over 1000 engines that can run on both renewable and non-renewable natural gas have been ordered. During combustion, reports indicate that natural gas releases 27% less carbon dioxide in comparison to diesel.

In 2019, United Parcel Service Inc. laid down their three-year plan to acquire over 6,000 trucks powered by natural gas. Later on, renewable natural gas was also to be purchased as a part of a $450 million investment to curb the impact of their 123,000-vehicle fleet on the environment.

In short, RNG and renewable gas can both be used in place of each other. RNG is derived from decomposing organic matter. Therefore, the move by Amazon to purchase more than 700 compressed natural gas class 6 and class 8 trucks will create a safe environment since greenhouse gas emissions would be reduced.
