Electronic logging devices are essential in the trucking industry. Mobile carriers are moving away from the 3G networks. Most in the industry must therefore migrate to the 5G network. Technology is a field where the industry must stay up to date with the current trends. If not, such truckers become outdated and may lose businesses.
ELDs that rely on 3G networks will not work with 5G technology. Therefore, truckers will be required to have the latest ELDs. The latest ELDs meet the minimum ELD requirements. Where the device does not support 3G, it will register a malfunction. The carrier would then have eight days to sort out the fault. When the eight days elapsed, the carrier would be non-compliant and call for legal sanctions. However, the carriers can request an extension where there is a need.
Mobile Carrier Deadlines
As per FMCSA, the mobile carriers have set their deadlines for 3G operations. Each has its deadlines. AT&T 3G set its deadline on February 22, 2022. Sprint 3G (T-Mobile) set theirs on March 31, 2022. Sprint LTE (T-Mobile) is operational till June 30, 2022.
On the other hand, Verizon 3G will offer its services until December 31, 2022. Though the carriers have set their deadlines, they are not fixed. Changes may occur where there would be a need.
What next for Motor Carriers
ELD providers have encouraged all motor carriers to verify if their ELDs rely on 3G network services. If so, they would have to liaise with their providers for an upgrade. The same is urgent since failure to do so is a compliance issue. And also, their ELD would not be able to transmit the necessary reports while in transit. Such reports include the hours of service. FMCSA issued alerts in advance and would not expect any violators.
Technology is the future of most, if not all the industries. Going forward, everyone must learn to embrace technology for more productivity. The network carriers have promised to help their customers move from 3G to 5G networks. Therefore, it would be wise if all were open to welcoming these changes for both compliance and their benefits. Such benefits include better speed network services that come with 5G. Change is inevitable; in this case, it's for the best.
