The number of female technicians in transportation has been a concern for quite a while now. In the modern day, most people stand for gender equality and equity. This involves having more women take up jobs that have always been perceived to be made for men. However, the numbers in transportation have been low for a while now. There are several reports to back the same up.
Female Technicians in Numbers
In an article by Transport Topics, the Women In Trucking Association (WIT) Index results showed that the numbers are still low. WIT Index began back in 2016. It is made of stats about women in the different roles in transportation. WIT index tracks and reports on how many women have taken up some of these roles.
The latest report by the WIT index, as of September 12th, showed that 13.7% of all drivers were female. It also found that only 3.7% of technicians in transportation were women. WIT President Ellen Voie said that there is a shortage of diesel technicians. She added that women are in a position to help address this shortage. She said that their foundation also works to address the same. They offer scholarships for women seeking training in this area. They also make an effort to promote this career to women.
WIT tries to keep tabs on women in transportation. It is an annual event. In the current year, they expanded the sample size for the survey. They looked at operations, human resources, management, and even sales. WIT also covers different companies within the industry. They include private fleets, railroads, manufacturers, and even technology companies. A total of 180 companies were part of this survey.
In this day and time, women are as equally qualified as men in all aspects. Over the years, the number of women in technical professions has been low. Despite the numbers increasing a little today, it is still not enough. WIT is working on trying to increase the number of women in transportation. They even offer scholarships to fund their training. With time, there will be more female technicians. This does not only apply to transportation but widely across all industries.
