Fleet growth always shows that a company is growing. Different sectors have seen this growth in recent years. The food service to the grocery, retail, oil, and gas, to name a few, are investing in private fleets. As reported by Transport Topics, most of them are now giving priority to in-house means of transport. Freight market conditions have not been bad for the shippers in the past two years. Most private carriers in North America now have quite expensive fleets compared to the past.
Food Service
Foodservice is one of the biggest sectors in the industry. Three of the largest fleets have remained the same from last year. Sysco Corp., US Foods, and Performance Foodservice hold the top three spots in this sector. Sysco downsized its fleet by 100 tractors. The other two, on the other hand, have bolstered their operations. PepsiCo Foods North America also improved its fleet size by 22%. They added 457 more tractors over the past year.
Beverage
Beverage is also a sector with quite some numbers. The top five in this sector also remained quite stable this year. PepsiCo Beverages North America led the way by a wide margin. Reyes Holdings was also well represented. Its companies held the second and fourth positions in this sector. Coca-Cola was quite dominant in the beverage sector. Coca-Cola Bottling Co. United came in at position three, while Swire Coca-Cola USA held the fifth position.
Agriculture and Food Processing
Tyson Foods is still at the helm of this sector, just like in the past. They added three hundred and nineteen tractors in the past year. Nutrien came in at number 2 with 2,815 tractors. They displaced CHS Inc. to the third position. Darling Ingredients and Prairie Farms Dairy complete the top five. It is after both had a significant growth in their fleet.
Other Sectors
Halliburton Co. retained its No. 1 spot in the petroleum and chemical sector. They have the largest fleet in the sector. Walmart Inc. is at the top of the wholesale and retail sector. They added 1,302 tractors in the past year. Amazon comes in second in the sector. The Quikrete Cos. maintained its place atop the building materials rankings. Builders FirstSource added 747 tractors and came in second.
United Natural Foods Inc. and McLane Co.’s retained their spots in first and second in the grocery sector. The top five in the manufacturing sector remained unchanged from a year ago. Clean Harbors also stayed on top in the waste management sector. Reworld, formerly Covanta, also joined the party at number five. United Rentals also retained its position at the top in the equipment rental section. However, the rest of the pack is breathing down their neck.
MasTec Inc. retained the first position in the construction sector, with 737 tractors in total. There was also not much change in the Paper and Office Products sector. Veritiv Corp., Boise Paper Holdings, and International Paper continue to lead the pack.
There was quite a shakeup in the Industrial Gases sector. Air Products came in ahead of Messer Americas for the second spot. American Air Liquide Holdings continues to lead the industry by a wide margin. Medline Industries continues to lead the healthcare sector. There has been significant growth in the past year. It is a good sign, and one can only hope that it gets even better.
