Truck emissions have been the talk of the town for a while now. As per Truckinginfo, the Environmental Protection Agency released the long-awaited Phase 3 greenhouse gas emissions standards. The standards mainly affect heavy-duty trucks, buses, and other large trucks. The main target is the North American trucking industry. The region is one of the biggest producers of greenhouse gases.

These standards aim to save the climate. Climate change is coming with dire effects. The new standards will help reduce emissions. In return, they will also save Americans lots of money that would have been used on healthcare. With a good climate, more people will be safe from early deaths and can focus on their work. People who live near busy areas will breathe fresh air.

Strict New Standards

The new standards will apply to the 2032 models of vehicles. For some vehicles, it will start with the 2027 models. EPA believes that it is possible to move forward with the new standards. They think that there has been enough time and resources to go ahead. The rules will become more and more challenging each year for six years. APA has its view of these changes. APA has always worked with EPA on such matters. However, they feel like the EPA is returning to what it initially came up with.

The new standards will work with any technology and will be compatible with all fuel types. ATA noted that manufacturers must move as many zero-emission vehicles as possible. ATA had its fair share of input. They requested some leniency. As much as they are for zero-emission, they want more time to prepare.

EPA is trying to be as supportive as possible. They have the averaging, banking, and trading programs to support the manufacturers. The aim is to make the process as smooth as possible. They want to help the manufacturers in all avenues available. ABT program will provide necessary plans to support keeping people healthy and safe.

The Truckers Reaction

Change is not always so welcomed more often than not. Truckers generally have an adverse reaction to the new standards. ATA believes that the timelines are not achievable. They believe that EPA has to consider all factors before making such a move. ATA believes the new strict standards will fail the supply chain and the industry. ATA is fully supportive of achieving zero emissions. Their only plea is that their journey must be as realistic as possible. They believe the standards are just not as realistic.

There is the belief that the final rules have failed to consider the challenges on the ground. The process of going electric is not that straightforward. There are lots of investments that have to be made, and there must be adequate charging locations. There is still a long way to go to achieve zero emissions.

Reduction of emissions is the end game for the industry. However, the process must consider all possible things that could happen if the truckers don't have enough time to comply. They must invest a lot. There is also the need to improve infrastructure that will support electrification. EPA believes they have a fair approach, but at the same time, they must be able to sit together with ATA and ensure they are both on the same page without using force.
