What is CDL, and why should you have it?

Driving a commercial motor vehicle is a huge responsibility. Therefore one must have a permit to operate it. That permit is called CDL, short for commercial driver's license. And it is a specialized driver's license that serves as proof that a person has higher standard knowledge and skills.

To obtain it in Florida, you must be at least 18 years old for intrastate driving; and 21 years old for interstate driving.
If interested in making driving your profession, you can choose between three classes of this license. With Class C, you can operate any vehicle:

• designed to transport 16 or more people (including yourself as a driver),
• designed to transport hazardous materials, and
• any vehicle that doesn't meet standards for Class A or B.
  With Class B, you can operate any single or combination of vehicles where the single-vehicle gross vehicle weight rating isn't more than 26,000 pounds (and being towed not more than 10,000 pounds). With the relevant endorsement, you can also operate all vehicles from class C.
  In the end, with Class A, you can operate with all combinations of vehicles where the gross vehicle weight rating is more than 26,000 pounds (and being towed weight more than 10,000 pounds). With the relevant endorsement, you can also operate all vehicles from class B and C.
