Mileage standards are on the rise and will become even more challenging, as reported by Transport Topics. The change will affect new cars in the future. By 2031, vehicles sold in the U.S. will have to average about 38 miles per gallon of gasoline. Currently, the requirement is about 29 miles per gallon. The Biden administration unveiled this new rule on June 7th.

The final rule will increase fuel economy by 2% per year. For passenger cars, this is from models of years 2027 to 2031. On the other hand, for SUVs, this is from 2029 to 2031. The main aim is to have the auto teams working on EVs. President Joe Biden has a plan to see that half the vehicles sold by 2030 are electric. Gasoline vehicles are the primary source of greenhouse gas emissions. The current number of EVs that people purchase stands at 7.6% of the total. The 50% target is a huge jump, which will see massive improvement if it turns out to be a success.

The president might propose all he wants, but he needs the auto industry to support him in making this a success. He also needs their political support as we enter the voting season. The auto industry is a huge voting bloc. They have pledged to support the president. However, they also have a few demands. They want to be sure that as they move towards EVs, jobs will not be lost.

Trump's camp is, of course, against the president's push for EVs. It is a political phase of the year, and they may differ on approaches or opinions on most matters. The new standards will save nearly 70 billion gallons of gasoline by 2050. At the same time, they will reduce emissions massively. The aim is not only to save people money but also to minimize pollution. Automakers must play their part to help fight the menace of pollution.

All agencies must work together to devise a solution to the emission issue. The mission is to save. They will save money and, at the same time, save the air. It will reduce the reliance on fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are the primary source of pollination. Highway safety involves setting standards that help deal with emissions. The administration had to compromise and settle on a 2% improvement. They couldn't go for a higher figure due to the pressure from the automakers.

In the future, fuel economy standards won't even matter. The world is fast moving towards electrification. The mileage standards help save on energy. There always must be a starting point. With the EVs forthcoming, there will not be a need for these standards. However, controls must be in place as long as we still have people buying these vehicles. Safety is quite a priority and can never be ignored. Safety is not all about what happens on the roads. The safety of the air we breathe is also just as important. The new standards, combined with the electrification of vehicles, will have a cleaner environment.
