Texas Department of Public Safety launched a new truck inspection facility along I-10. The inspection facility is of high technological advancement to live up to urgent needs as far as safety checks are concerned. The facility has a four-lane shade that accommodates trucks for inspection. TxDPS Director Steven McCraw stated that the reason behind the massive investment is to uphold safety on the roads.

So, the devices installed will be able to give immediate feedback to allow for seamless compliance verification.

The technological investment of $1 million includes weigh-in-motion sensors, over-height detectors, hazardous materials placard, and carrier identification sensors. So, the devices installed will be able to give immediate feedback to allow for seamless compliance verification. Also, the sensors query the database and bring back all the information linked to the specific truck to determine if it is out on the road legally. The significant advantage is that only trucks that fail the initial screening will be stopped. And that doesn't affect other trucks in any way. With this method other carriers save time they would otherwise spend in lanes.

Assesing the trucks' weight without making a stop

Dan Middleton, a research engineer at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, said that the weigh-in-motion part of the technology would be essential in identifying overloaded trucks. Assessing the trucks' weight is done without making a stop. A thermal imaging device is also incorporated to evaluate the breaks to detect any abnormalities based on the temperatures recorded, as reported by Greg Seidenberger. There are troopers and enforcement officers stationed at the facility to examine brakes among other truck parts. Seidenberger reiterated how improved the weighing system is, citing how quick it is to weigh each axle just on the go.

New Truck Inspection Facility's goal

The facility’s goal is primarily to provide safety of the highest order without disrupting commercial operations. Middleton said that Interstate 10 is vital as it connects the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to the Port of Houston, facilitating all sorts of the commodity. José Weissmann acknowledged how much service the I-10 offers hence the traffic experienced in those regions.
