Several Original Equipment Manufacturers revealed their plans to venture into the production of electric trucks. The manufacture will be in addition to the few that are already in the testing phase. Elon Musk and Tesla attracted attention when they unveiled the prototype of a battery-electric Class 8 Tesla Semi. Currently, they are not the only ones aiming at electric truck production. Also, Daimler, Volvo, Navistar International, and Paccar will be diving into productions 2021/22.

There are several hindrances to the mass commercial rollout of electric trucks. The trucks come at a higher price compared to diesel trucks. The charging points are also a challenge since they can only serve a few trucks at a given location. Another challenge posed would be if the batteries would be able to support long-distance deliveries.

the best suited for the massive rollout

California is best suited for the massive battery-electric truck rollout. The reason is, there is a requirement for most of the trucks in the region to be zero-emission vehicles by 2035. Greater Toronto Area, Greater Montreal, and the Cascadia Region stretching from Vancouver to Oregon were also among favorable locations.

The battery prices have been consistently dropping over time. In addition to the costs, the battery weights have also reduced with time. The expenses of the amount of electricity required to recharge the electric vehicles will vary depending on the regions, affecting the trucks' deployment. The only way to counter the costs of the recharge would be by cutting operational costs. The positive thing is that electric trucks are still more economical than diesel-powered trucks.

The biggest concern about the trucks is how far they would be able to travel. Trucks involved in short-distance deliveries are easy to recharge at the end of the shifts at homes. The chargers to be used by the commercial vehicles will require High-Power Charging outlets to suit them. The Commercial Vehicles standard outlets will charge the trucks in just 30 minutes saving on time consumed during charging.

Longer-lasting braking system

The trucks will come with some positives as far as maintenance is concerned. The braking system will last longer, and no work will be needed on the internal combustion engines. There will be advantages for mechanics, as they will gain lots of experience from dealing with electric trucks. They will, however, need to be well-equipped with insulated tools for safety.

Canadian OEMs will not be left behind in the production of electric trucks. General Motors, Lion Electric, amongst many other OEMs, will be heavily involved in the manufacturing. Apart from the battery-electric vehicles, companies that operate for longer distances and transporter more weights will explore fuel-cell-electric vehicles. Daimler, Volvo, Nikola Motor, General Motors, Toyota, and Kenworth, among many others, will are all interested in hydrogen-powered fuel-cell-electric vehicles.
